Introduction
Hadassah College's Environmental Health Sciences program offers a unique field of study towards a B.Sc., the only degree of its kind being offered in Israel. This program is intended for individuals who are interested in creating a healthy environment for mankind, and want a profession that incorporates a sound science base with an ethical mission.
The urban and hi-tech lives of today have positive and negative effects, both physically and psychologically, on all members of society. Environmental Health Sciences is an interdisciplinary program of study, which incorporates: biology, chemistry, public health and engineering, with an emphasis on the effect of the environment on human health. The program involves theoretical components which are supplemented with practical aspects related to the assessment and control of environmental factors that could potentially be dangerous to the health of current and future generations.
The uniqueness of this program lies in the practical experience that students receive - which is embedded into all aspects of the curriculum. The Environmental Health Sciences curriculum is designed to educate professionals by equipping graduates with the tools necessary for identification, assessment, prevention, and control of environmental factors potentially harmful to human health, quality of life and to the stability and sustainability of ecosystems. In addition, graduates will obtain the necessary skills to plan, implement, update and enforce related programs.
Graduates will find employment in government sectors that are responsible for health and the quality of the environment and in industry, research and development laboratories, hospitals, consulting firms, teaching and in environmental and "green" NGO's. The faculty members are highly skilled and experienced academics from various prestigious universities, the Israeli Ministry of Health and experts currently working in the field in Israel.
Study Objectives
Graduates will be granted a recognized B.Sc. degree. They will have 1) the ability to identify and treat various environmental dangers and risk factors, 2) advanced skills in assessment of risk factor magnitude and possible health and environmental ramifications thereof and 3) expertise in the preparation of prevention plans and necessary skills for implementation.
Duration of Studies
Three Years (six semesters) and one summer semester, in which students will complete their final project, seminar and elective courses.

Amongst Fields of Study, Subjects Include:
Environmental Health
Subjects within this field provide students with scientific information and applications necessary for the profession of environmental health. Including an understanding of the exposure systems and their influence on human health and knowing the steps we can take for quality control and prevention of health hazards. Within this subject, the courses include: familiarization with water sources in Israel, hydrology, understanding pollution processes of ground water, chemical reactions in water, parameters for defining, microbial and chemical water quality, soil and land, chemical and biological processes that take place in soil, the refuse problem and the various ways to deal with it in Israel and the world. Students also learn the various methods available to record hazardous materials and different mechanisms, linked to diseases through food, analyzing occurrences of food poisoning and quality control of food production - understanding the spread of disease by insects and insect control.
Air Quality, Industrial Hygiene, Noise and Radiation
These subjects provide students with scientific information in the fields of meteorology, air pollution and hazards in the physical environment- through understanding the mechanisms that create air pollution and changes in our atmosphere. Students receive practical training in monitoring, air quality control and prevention of air pollution. Subjects of courses include: familiarization with global problems of air pollution, global climate changes and understanding the effects on our health, introduction to industrial hygiene, radiation factors in the workplace, penetration mechanisms of chemical materials into the body, hazards at the workplace from gasses and insecticides, rules and legislation for industrial exposure, tools and methods to measure noise and earthquakes, acoustic issues during the planning stages and solutions, Israel's standards and international standards, sources of radiation exposure, the basics of radiation protection and familiarization with uses of nuclear energy.
Planning, Legislation, Environmental Administration and Education for Environmental Health
The subjects in these courses expose students to ideas in the field of physical planning and deal with the following issues and subjects: understanding the reciprocal relationship between the planning fields and the environmental fields; central environmental issues in Israel, from the environmental health and the legislative perspectives, legislation and rulings that deal with central issues of environmental health in Israel and basic methods and applications in public administration.
